FUSED Editorial Column - Indiana Jones: Expectations and Reservations

indiana_jones_temple_of_doom.jpgAlmost 8 months ago Steven Spielberg addressed fans through a live feed at the San Diego Comic Con. In his address it was revealed to the world that Karen Allen would be back to reprise her role of Marion Ravenwood.

This was an exciting announcement. In the address Spielberg commented about his journey as a director and how it is great to return to the Indiana Jones universe. He said,” This is a movie for the fans, for you guys.” I was so excited to hear those words to see him and George together again to bring Indy back on the big screen.

As the hype grew and everyone began to speculate what the films subtitle would be, it happened. At the 2007 MTV Movie Awards, Shia Lebeouf broke the news to everyone.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This title took my expectations, dreams and hype for the long awaited sequel and quickly turned them into reservations and concerns. When I heard the subtitle I knew exactly what a crystal skull was and the theories that revolve around them. The first thing that came to my mind was Stargate SG-1, which is a favorite show of mine. I then immediately began to wonder if the movie would have Indy pit up against aliens and my concerns grew even stronger.

A few weeks ago we broke the picture of the crystal skull and my concerns were valid. An alien crystal skull was the focal point of one of the most prominent and greatest action adventure heroes to ever grace the world of cinema.

I couldn’t believe my eyes and now after viewing the first trailer today my concerns and expectations haven’t changed. I worry about this film for a few reasons. First, it may be too little too late for an Indy sequel. Secondly, the story just makes me quiver…the idea that Indiana Jones is not going after something a little more historically viable than a crystal skull, which as of today in this world we live in, has been discounted as a hoax. Thirdly, even though I admire George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, I somewhat believe they may be trying too hard to live in the past. Lucas completely failed my expectations on the last Star Wars trilogy, which let’s be honest, was terrible. Spielberg’s last few movies weren’t exactly great either. I will admit if the movie is bad they shouldn’t be blamed, entirely. Scriptwriter, David Koepp, should be blamed whole heartedly and then taken out and beaten with sticks.

I know some would argue that Harrison, Lucas and Spielberg never would have done the movie if the script was bad but at the same time if you want to return to something so bad you would do it at any cost. I am a very open-minded and optimistic person. I will see this movie and chances are I will enjoy it but there will still be that part of me that could say,”In 20 years this is what they came up with”.

I pray nightly with my Indiana Jones replica hat on that the movie will be everything I wished for because you see this will be the first time I can go see him on the big screen because I was 4 years old when The Last Crusade came to theaters.

In the mean time I hope everyone respects the concerns I have and understands that I am not bashing the movie but rather questioning the direction as of the moment based upon the facts that I have.  So, please continue to stay FUSED on Film and remember “success is not final, failure is not fatal but it is the courage to continue that counts.” Lets hope that this movie is a success  and that continues to bring fans and moviegoers alike the same great stories we remember.

Peace and Love! ~ Kent…
