So this review is late because we missed the press screening and had to watch it this week.
Summer wouldn’t be complete without a musical comedy! Mamma Mia! certainly delivers! The musical showcases the musical talents of Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnen, Stellan Skarsgård, Colin Firth, and Mean Girls’ Amanda Seyfried.
The film starts as 20 year old Sophie (Seyfried) is preparing to marry her boyfriend Sky (Dominic Cooper) at her mother, Donna’s (Streep), hotel on an island in Greece. She seemingly has it all; a carefree life, loving boyfriend and happy friends but one thing has been missing all her life; a father. Her only wish now is to be given away by her dad at her wedding.
By reading her mother’s diary she discovers that she has three possible fathers. Sophie then secretly invites all three men in a desperate bid to discover which of them is her father before the wedding bells start to chime! The story is told using hit songs by the popular ’70s group ABBA.
I really enjoyed the movie overall. It was upbeat, easy to follow and shot on a location that was to die for! I was really surprised at how talented Meryl Streep and many of the other big actors were. It’s obvious they aren’t professional singers but the big names do help out at the box office. Brosnen, Firth, and Skarsgård play the three possible baby-daddies to Sophie. The movie is a comedy and you really can’t help but smile when these three open their mouths to sing. It’s not that they’re bad, it’s just comical. But at least we now know that there is in fact potential for James Bond: The Musical. It was definitely fun to watch all these big name actors sing and dance across the screen. I urge you to stay and watch the credits, because you are in for a treat!
Regardless of how you feel about musicals, Mamma Mia! is still a fun feel good summer flick. Also starring Julie Walters and Christine Baranski.
