Venom Film - A Spidey Spinoff!
So with no real news on Spidey 4 hitting and the up and down news of Raimi wanting to do it and nothing about James Vanderbilt script. However there now some news regarding Venom, According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is looking to branch off of its franchise with a sequel centering on the villain Venom.
The trade reports that Sony had ordered a draft from Mean Creek scribe Jacob Estes, although now it is reported that the studio wants a different take on the subject and is now searching for different writers for this potential spin-off.
It seems too that Topher Grace isn’t being sought for the role and the trade reports that the role is being shopped around. Apparently the studio doesn’t feel that Grace can anchor a summer staple release.
Sony does have Spider-Man 4 in development though, but the pic isn’t slated for release until 2011.
My thoughts on this are basically make the movie, Venom is a popular character but you have to make it in a way where the people identify with the Venom character and it is hard to get people to do that since he is pure evil. So means he is probably the antagonist of the film so who is your protagonist?
Spiderman? Then you might as well call it Spidey 4.
Venom is actually NOT pure evil. If you’re gonna be true to the comics, Venom always cared about innocents as a matter O fact, for a while in the comics he moved away from New York and lived in San Francisco as a “Lethal Protector” of innocents. Think Punisher. You don’t think The Punisher is pure evil do you?
What you saw in Spidey 3 was not the full picture on the Venom character.
What we saw in SM3, was nothing more than Raimi trying to kneecap a character he did not understand. Venom is so much more than a goof, that while I do not hate SM3. I loathe what Raimi did to Venom, and hope he never returns to the Spidey films becuase of it.
Venom is a great character. Which has earned a solid freakin film. Here’s hoping Marvel does it right.
