Dracula: Year Zero - Director Proyas talks Mythos and more!

A new take on Dracula is in motion and former I-Robot and Dark City, director Alex Proyas is the guy giving it to us. In a recent conversation with MTV Movie Blog Proyas talked about his upcoming film, Dracula: Year Zero and revealed some of the elements of this classic horror character that will be involved in his take, and the ones that won’t.

“sort of the origin tale that mixes [the historical] Prince Vlad of Transylvania with sort of [fictionalized] Bram Stoker [take].” Of the many unique elements of this character, he said his take will certainly have bite.

“Oh, you’ve got to have teeth,” Proyas exclaimed. “I mean, the teeth are really important. I think Frank Langella in the ‘Dracula’ movie that was made in the 70s, I think he didn’t want to have teeth in the movie. But, no, I like the teeth. I want to see girls with a lot of teeth.”

“I think the garlic thing is kind of weird,” Proyas laughed.

Proyas didn’t comment on Dracula’s ability to transform into a bat in his reboot, but he apparently did add these inclusions:

“Stakes and teeth. And there is lots and lots of blood!”

This is a project that intrigues me and I have to say that Vampire movies are never out of style. It will be interesting to see a new spin on the Dracula mythos, afterall thats one thing I liked about Buffy and Angel is the mythology that Whedon created was different in many ways. I liked Nightwatch and Daywatch because of the spin on the “vampire” mythos Bermekbanbetov created. Twilight will apparently deliver a new spin too. Dracula: Year Zero to me is an interesting concept and Proyas is a great visual director but his ability to bring a good story to the screen hasn’t impressed me as of late. Either way this is a project we will keep tabs on.

  1. Excellent, Proyas only seems to do a film once in a blue moon and even if his films aren’t good, they’re enjoyable on some level, ‘Dark City’ and ‘The Crow’ being my favorites of his. He’s one of those music video directors that along with Michael Bay and David Fincher have made a successful transition to features. I can’t wait to see what he does with this.
