Is “Doctor Who” Getting Big Screen Treatment?

Could a hit BBC/Sci-Fi Channel series make its way to the big screen? If it’s up to the series’ new showrunner, it very well could happen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steven Moffat, the new showrunner for Doctor Who, has said he would like to see a silver-screen version of the series.

“It would be good to see it in the cinema so long as it is great and fantastic,” Moffat said. He did add, though, that he didn’t want the film to butt heads with the series.

“I’m not against it … so long as it never gets in the way of the TV Show. If it got in the way of the show that would be appalling,” Moffat said.

I think this is a good idea and as a new fan of the Doctor, who started watching the series reincarnation with Christopher Eccelston, I have always said they should do a movie. I can see it being called Doctor Who: Time Lord and it being primarily the battle between the Time Lords and the Daleks, kind of a prequel to the series.

Also I see it tying up some of the history of the Doctor and his home world of Gallifrey. However, I agree with Moffat’s concern a lot of what I just mentioned is part of the show’s mystery and the mystery of the Doctor so if a big film got in the way of what they wanted to do with the show then I say do not do it. Also there is the concern of how popular a big-screen adaptation would be for the audience in America, who haven’t grown up with the Doctor the way the folks in Britain have. It is interesting to think about though and I welcome it if it happens.

  1. While the Time Lord vs Daleks battle would be interesting, the problem is that it would have to be a McGann/Eccleston affair and we all want Tennant. I’m also loathe to allow it to be dumbed down for Hollywood - especially after what they did on the TV movie (and what they were considering doing - Borusa as father etc..)
