Marvel Phase 4 Guide – What Life After Avengers 4 Will Look Like
Discover Fused Film’s pitch guide for the next round of Marvel films currently billed as Phase 4. These films will likely span 2019 - 2022 culminating in another new event type film.
What does a Marvel Phase 4 Look Like?
“Captain Marvel” and “Avengers 4” are approaching their much awaited release dates effectively ending Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That hasn’t stopped many from wondering what happens next?
That hasn’t stopped many from wondering what happens next? Marvel made a name for themselves building hype years in advance announcing all the films that would make up a particular phase but ever since the release of “Avengers: Infinity War”, Marvel has remained quiet on the Phase 4 film slate front. Back in April of this year, Marvel, godfather and Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige told us the following:
“Ideally, I think that’s what we’d like to do. We did a big event a couple of years ago where we announced like ten movies between 2014 and 2019 and we haven’t delivered all of those yet and we haven’t delivered the promise when we made that really big deal of announcing all those movies. And so now to make a big deal of ‘even more movies, before the movies that we already announced!’ doesn’t seem like the right thing to do.”
Speculation is that Marvel Phase 4 slate will be announced and shared with the world at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019 with Marvel returning to the famed Hall H after a no show year in 2018. One of the speculations on Marvel’s reluctance to announce the next slate of films is the merger between Disney and Fox might have changed the original planned Phase 4 films allowing for new content that Marvel will be owning to factor into their future MCU plans.
So here is Fused Film’s idea of what to expect for the Marvel Phase 4 slate of movies.
What Films We Know For Sure Are in Marvel Phase 4
2019, 2020 and 2021 are years that are fast approaching and in today’s filmmaking environment release dates are something you have to book way in advance and so are filmmaking production dates.
We already know that at least one Phase 4 film is in the works and that is the sequel to “Spider-man: Homecoming” known as “Spider-man: Far From Home” which has a release date of July 5, 2019. There has been a lot of set photos and leaks coming from the production but there is no confirmed plot details that have been released by Marvel/Disney.
Presumably the film will follow Peter Parker post the events of Avengers 4, while resuming his normal life as a student at Midtown School of Science and Technology. Just like previous film’s title Homecoming referred to the film’s climactic homecoming high school dance and Spider-Man’s return home from Germany after his appearance in “Captain America: Civil War,” Feige has confirmed that the name Far From Home will have additional significance as well. Peter Parker will be leaving the USA for at least some of the new film. “There’s another reason we’re shooting in London, which is, yes, Spidey, of course, will spend some time in New York, but he’ll spend some time in other parts of the globe,” Feige told io9.
Unconfirmed, officially, is the villain of the film is going to be Quentin Black aka, Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Mysterio is an illusionist and master hypnotist whose technical wizardry allows him to build a suit (and glass dome helmet) packed with all kinds of nifty gadgets. The Spider-man films in the MCU have already established the “friendly neighborhood” aspect of the world Peter Parker lives in given the grounded nature of how the Vulture was represented in the first film, Mysterio will likely follow the same pattern.
Outside of “Spider-man: Far From Home,” there are a few other Marvel Phase 4 projects we know about.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is currently being described as “on hold” until the James Gunn replacement and his firing aftermath can be sorted out between the studio, cast, and production timeline. Initial reports surrounding that project’s plot seemed to revolve around the emergence of Adam Warlock in the film given his tease at the end of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”
“Black Widow” and “The Eternals” are the other projects being rumored for Marvel Phase 4. “Black Widow,” like the other female led Marvel film, “Captain Marvel,” will go back into the 80s-90s to explore Natasha Romanoff’s origin as well as her pre-SHIELD career as a freelance assassin leading up to the first Avengers film. The film will be directed by Cate Shoreland.
“The Rider,” director Chloe Zhao has been set to direct “The Eternals” according to Variety. Matthew and Ryan Firpo are on board to pen the script with Marvel president Kevin Feige producing.
Created by Jack Kirby, the story of “The Eternals” is set millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered individuals as well as more villainous off-shoots known as the Deviants. The two groups went on to battle each other throughout history to see which would eventually become the ultimate race. “‘Eternals’ is one of many many many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate,” Feige said.
“Black Panther 2” is also on the horizon with Ryan Coogler returning to pen and direct the sequel to the acclaimed, “Black Panther.”
That is the latest and greatest information that we know of regarding the next couple of movies expected in Marvel Phase 4. According to Feige, in talking with Vanity Fair, the MCU will have a lot on its plate even after the fourth Avengers film hits the big screen. Here’s what Feige had to say:
“22 movies in, and we’ve got another 20 movies on the docket that are completely different from anything that’s come before — intentionally.”
Disney + or Disney Plus is the new streaming service that will be launching sometime in 2019. Part of the new service offering will be exclusive Marvel content such as a Loki series starring Tom Hiddleston and a Falcon/Bucky Barnes series. There is no information regarding these series, their plots, and their release dates. It is also not known how these series will fit into the current MCU canon. Loki was killed in the opening 10 minutes of “Avengers: Infinity War,” but us set to return in Avengers 4 in either flashbacks or time travel scenes. The Falcon and Winter Soldier series was reported by Variety who learned exclusively that Malcolm Spellman is going to write a series featuring the two superheroes.
Ten Marvel Phase 4 Films We Are Expecting
Until next year’s San Diego Comic-Con we will have to continue the speculation train for Marvel Phase 4 or whatever Kevin Feige decides to call it. In order to pass the time, Fused Film, has put together our desired Phase 4 slate of films.
A few assumptions are being made to defend this list of movies. Feige mentioned that the next iteration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be “very different.” This is presumably to avoid market and fan fatigue. The last 10 years of the MCU was designed to tell the Avengers and the Infinity Stones story across multiple films. Avengers 4 will most likely wrap that storyline up presenting a whole new direction for the future. Another assumption is that the Fox merger will play into the future of the MCU as well as rumored events we will learn from Captain Marvel and Avengers 4. Lastly, we are assuming that the original Avengers, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man and Hulk will not continue after Avengers 4 whether through death or riding off into the sunset.
So here is our Phase 4 film slate:
Spider-man: Far From Home – Peter Parker returns from the events of Infinity War and Avengers 4 a very different person but must resume his sophmore year at Midtown Science and Technology while upholding his mantle as Spider-man. Set to face-off with Spider-man is Mysterio, a master illusionist and hypnotist. It is rumored Parker will be in London for some of the film with his school studying abroad.
Black Widow – At birth, the Black Widow (aka Natasha Romanova) is given to the KGB, which grooms her to become its ultimate operative. When the U.S.S.R. breaks up, the government tries to kill her as the action moves to present-day New York, where she is a freelance operative. The standalone film will find Romanoff living in the United States 15 years after the fall of the Soviet Union.
The Eternals – We are guessing this project is getting pushed up so this cosmic storyline can help fill the void with the delayed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 project and fill in some much needed gaps of the cosmic universe. Captain Marvel will introduce the Kree/Skrull war but this story will take us back to millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials (StarLord Peter Quill is half-Celestial) genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered individuals as well as more villainous off-shoots known as Deviants. The two groups went on to battle each other throughout history to see which would eventually become the ultimate race. The story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans. What will be really neat if this film establishes someone like Eternity or Galactus and others that could bring some nice depth as well as the next Thanos of the MCU.
Black Panther 2 – Killmonger and Klaue are dead so this film will be interesting in it’s villain choice. Set after the events of Avengers Infinity War and Avengers 4 will also play into this movie as well. Possibly rebuilding the country while also continuing T’Challa’s plan of opening Wakanda to the rest of the world. It would be interesting to see T’Challa and M’Baku’s relationship be strained going into this film, especially if rumors are true of M’Baku assuming the Wakandan throne in T’Challa’s absence after the Snap. M’Baku and his rivalry would escalate into him becoming Man-Ape.
Dr. Strange 2 – It is almost certain this sequel will find Doctor Strange returning to his post to protect the Sanctum after the events of Infinity War and reestablishing his possession of the Eye of Agomotto (time stone). The previous film established Baron Mordo’s new distaste for sorcerers and the previous Sorcerer Supreme and her use of the dark dimension. Our guess is this film will build Mordo into the main villain, hunting down sorcerers to restore balance by stripping them of their power.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – One of the most popular series to date. This movie is going to happen one way or another. Presumably this film will use James Gunn’s script and feature the emergence of Adam Warlock. It is also possible if Chris Hemsworth wants to keep going as Thor and he doesn’t die at the end of Avengers 4, he could join the cast but that would then make it hard for the team to stand out from his shadow. We also think Captain Marvel and The Eternals storylines could influence this film. I hope at the end of this movie we get a huge set-up for last movie in this phase.
Ant-man and The Wasp Sequel – At the end of the most Ant-man sequel, Ant-man and the Wasp the credits announced that Ant-man and the Wasp would return. No plot ideas at this point but it would be neat to follow the Black Ant storyline involving rogue SHIELD agent, Eric O’Grady finding a new version of the Ant-man suit and framing Scott Lang.
The Fantastic Four – This is wishful thinking but with the original Avengers team most likely being gone after Avengers 4 laying the groundwork for the first family of Marvel to make their way into MCU would be awesome. Their origin could involve studying the Quantum Realm and its dimensional energy transforming them into Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm, The Thing, and The Human Torch. Whether or not Doctor Doom would make a great villain is unknown considering the most recent reboot and the 2005 film also featured him as a villain, Feige is known to do something unique and different. The end of this movie would also fall in-line with the cosmic events and laid out in Guardians Vol. 3 and The Eternals.
Captain Marvel 2 – We haven’t seen the first one or know too much about the plot of the first film that releases in March of 2019 so there is not a lot to say here. If the first film has any kind of success there will be a sequel planned for Marvel Phase 4.
The New Avengers: The Secret War – This would be an awesome finale to Phase 4 and build nicely on the previous films mentioned. We wouldn’t suggest adapting the Secret Wars plotline directly out of the comments but taking the usual MCU approach to adapting it for the screen. Ideally it would feature the New Avengers (Captain Marvel, Spider-man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Ant-man, and The Wasp) teaming up with the Fantastic Four (Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm, The Thing and the Human Torch) as they fight against Doctor Doom (the new Loki character for the next phase of the MCU) who has secretly unleashed Beyonders on Earth.
